Rather common breeding resident of forests, scrub lands and home gardens of dry lowlands to adjoining drier mid hills. Rare and very local in the wet zone and hills. It feeds on nectar from flowers as well as small caterpillars, spiders and such other small insects. Purple Sunbird breeds from February to May. The nest is a suspended fibrous bag in open places or a hole in dense cobweb masses of a spider's web where it lays two eggs.
