Rather uncommon breeding resident inhabiting forests, well wooded areas and open wooded areas of the dry lowlands up to dry mid hills. Also a small scattered populations occurred in the wet lower hills near
Kandy. It lives as pairs or as small family parties and mainly feeds on ants. The breeding season is from February to July and it lays two or three eggs in a hole dug by the birds in a tree trunk or underside of a branch.
