Drongo-cuckoo/Fork-tailed Drongo-cuckoo/කවුඩු කොහා[Kawudu Koha] (Surniculus dicruroides)

Rather uncommon breeding resident of open forests, wooded areas and adjoining open scrublands from lowland to higher hills. Fork-tailed Drongo-cuckoo feeds on various insects such as caterpillars and beetles and probably some fruits and seeds. Not much is known about its breeding in Sri Lanka but believed to be parasitized in Common Iora and Dark-fronted Babbler nests. 

ලබු ගිරවා (Psittacula eupatria)

ලබු ගිරවා පහත රට ප්‍රදේශ වල සිට කඳුකරයේ මධ්‍යම උස් මට්ටම් දක්වා එතරම් සුලභ නොවන ලෙස හමුවන දේශීය පක්ෂියෙකි. එහෙත් ඇතැම් ප්‍රදේශ වල ස්ථානීය වශයෙන් සුලභව දැකිය හැක. ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් වියලි කලාපයේ හමුවන මුත් තෙත් කලාපයේද කලාතුරකින් දැකිය හැක. ජෝඩු වශයෙන් හෝ කුඩා හෝ විශාල රංචු වශයෙන් වනාන්තර සහ ගහ කොළන් සහිත පරිසර පද්ධති වල සැරිසරමින් පළතුරු, බීජ වර්ග සහ ධාන්‍ය ආහාරයට ගන්නා ලබු ගිරවා නොවැම්බර් සිට මැයි දක්වා කාලයේ විශාල මැරුණ හෝ එසේ නොවන ගසක ස්වාභාවිකව ඇතිවූ හෝ කෑරළුන් විසින් තැනූ කුහරයක් තම අවශ්‍යතාවය පරිදි විශාල කරගෙන තැනූ බෙනයක බිත්තර 2 ත් 4 ත් අතර ප්‍රමාණයක් දමා අභිජනනය කරයි

පන් වඩුකුරුල්ලා (Ploceus manyar flaviceps)

පන් වඩුකුරුල්ලා පහත රට වියලි කලාපයේ වගුරු බිම් සහ වැව් ඉවුරු වල දැකිය හැකි උස් පන් ගාල් වල ස්ථානීය වශයෙන් සුලභ දේශීයව අභිජනනය කරන පක්ෂියෙකි. ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් වෙරළාශ්‍රිත එවන් පරිසර පද්ධති වල දැකිය හැක. කලාතුරකින් පහත රට තෙත් කලාපයේ එවන් ස්ථාන වලටද සංක්‍රමණය වේ. රංචු වශයෙන් හැසිරෙන පන් වඩුකුරුල්ලා කුඹුරු සහ වගුරු බිම් වල බීජ වර්ග සහ කෘමින් ආහාරයට ගනිමින් ජීවත් වේ. පෙබරවාරි සිට ඔක්තෝබර් දක්වා මාස වල පන් ගාල් වල විසිරුණු කොලනි වශයෙන් ගෝලාකාර කූඩු තනා අභිජනනය කරයි. පන් වඩු කුරුල්ල සිය කූඩුව රුක් වඩු කුරුල්ලාගේ කූඩුවට වඩා කෙටි පිවිසුමක් සහිතව පන් වලින් තනයි.

Bird Watching @ Palatupana

මහ වැලි ඔලෙය්යා/රජ වැලි ඔලෙවියා (Charadrius leschenaultii)

 මුහුදු වෙරළ, කලපු, ගංගා මෝය වල ඉවුරු සහ වෙරළාශ්‍රිත මඩ වගුරු ආදියෙහි තරමක් දුර්ලභ ලෙස හමුවන සංචාරක පක්ෂියෙකි. ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් වියලි කලාපයෙහි එවන් පරිසර පද්ධති වල හමුවේ. තනි තනි පක්ෂීන් වශයෙන් හෝ කුඩා රංචු ලෙසින් කුඩා භෞමික කෘමීන්, කකුළුවන්, ඉස්සන් වැනි ක්‍රස්ටේෂීයන් පවුලේ සතුන් සහ පණුවන් ගොදුරු කරගනිමින් වෙසේ. ඈත පෙරදිග ආසියානු ප්‍රදේශවල සහ ජපානයේ අභිජනනය කරයි.

වැලි සිලිවටුවා/වැලි හින්නා (Calidris alba)

ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් උතුරු, වයඹ සහ ගිණිකොණදිග වෙරළ තීරයන්හි එතරම් සුලභ නොවන ලෙස හමුවන සංචාරක පක්ෂියෙකි. කුඩා හෝ මධ්‍යම ප්‍රමාණයේ රංචු ලෙසින් වෙරළේ මුහුදු රල වෙරළ සමග හැපී ආපසු යනවිට ඒ සමග වේගයෙන් ඇවිදිමින් වෙරළට ගොඩගසන කුඩා අපෘෂ්ඨවංශී සතුන් ගොදුරු කරගනිමින් වාසය කරයි. වැලි සිලිවටුවා උතුරු අර්ධගෝලයේ ඈත තුන්ද්‍රා බිම් වල අභිජනනය කරයි.

Saunders's Tern (Sternula saundersi)

Rare breeding resident of coastal waters, estuaries, lagoons, and other wetlands in the dry zone coastal areas. It breeds from May to June in small colonies, with dispersed nests in shallow scrape above tide line on mud or sandbars and in sand-dunes, along the north-western coastline.

Chinese Pond-Heron (Ardeola bacchus)

Very rare vagrant bird with few sight records in Sri Lanka. It breeds in Assam and Burma to Eastern China and Manchuria and in the Andaman islands. Non-breeding and immature Chinese Pond-Herons are indistinguishable from the common resident Indian Pond-Herons. However, during the breeding season, the Chinese Pond-Heron's distinctive maroon-chestnut head and neck make identification easier. As a result, all recorded sightings of this species in Sri Lanka have occurred at the end of the migratory season. 

Chinese Pond Heron was first time recorded in Sri Lanka by Dieter Zingel (Germany) on 30^th April 1995 at Deberawewa (Hoffmann, T. W., 1996). Later on sight record(s) available by Rex. I. de Silva from Negambo Lagoon (Kotagama S. & Ratnavira G. 2017: 258)

There is also a observation of two birds with photographic evidences on 16th May 2020 by Thishan Jeevaka Perera at Halmillagolawa Wewa, Saliya Wewa, Puttalam, according to the Ceylon Bird Club notes (https://www.ceylonbirdclub.org/the_ceylon_bird_club_news.php)

1) A single bird with breeding plumage by Alexander Cherinko at Flooded Fields near Rekawa Beach, Tangalle, Hambantota on 25th April 2021
2) A single bird with breeding plumage by Edmundas Greimas Sigiriya Water Garden, Dambulla, Matale on 8th April 2024
3) A single bird with breeding plumage by Tharaka Dhananjaya, Ashan Tharaka Piyasinghe and Osanda Dissanayake at Anavilundawa Bird sanctuary on 4th April 2025.

Great Knot (Calidris tenuirostris)

 Rather rare winter migrant to tidal mud-flats, lagoons and salt-pans of dry zone coastal areas, mainly in the northern part of the country.  It lives as solitary birds or as small flocks and feeds by probing. Great Knot breeds in north-eastern Siberia. 

Red Knot (Calidris canutus)

Rare winter migrant to mud and sand flats as well as the borders of lagoons and estuaries of the dry zone coastal areas. Even though very gregarious birds, both in feeding and flight, in Sri Lanka it is most likely to be found as solitary individuals or as flocks of 2-3 birds. Red Knot breeds in  far northern lands. 

Terek Sandpiper (Xenus cinereus)

 Rather uncommon winter migrant to lagoons, estuaries, tidal creeks, saltpans and mudflats of lowland coastal areas, mainly in the dry zone. It lives as solitary birds or as few to several scattered birds, usually associating with other sandpipers and plovers. It feeds on various small shore-line animals and has a habit of  carrying them to the water edge and washing them before swallowing. It breeds in the high north of Europe and Asia.  

දාර මහවටුවා/වයිර පෙඳ ගොහොදුවිත්තා (Limosa lapponica)

 දිවයිනේ උතුරු ප්‍රදේශයේ වෙරළබඩ කලපු, මඩ වගුරු, ගංගා මෝය වැනි පරිසර පද්ධති වලට ලෝකයේ උතුරු අර්ධගෝලයේ රටවල ශීත සෘතුව බලපැවැත්වෙන කාලයේදී පැමිණෙන දුර්ලභ සංචාරක පක්ෂියෙකි. කලාතුරකින් දිවයිනේ දකුණු ප්‍රදේශයේ වෙරළබඩ ප්‍රදේශ වලින්ද පක්ෂීන් වාර්තා වී ඇත. නොගැඹුරු ජලයේ බැස ගමන් කරමින් පණුවන්, කකුළුවන් සහ වෙනත් එවැනි කුඩා ජලජ සත්වයන් ගොදුරු කරගන්නා දාර මහවටුවා තනි තනි පක්ෂීන් ලෙසින් හෝ කුඩා රංචු ලෙසින් හමුවේ.

කකුළු ඔලෙවියා (Dromas ardeola)

උතුරු සහ වයඹ දිග මුහුදු වෙරළ, කලපු, ගංගා මෝයවල්, වැලි පර සහ කොරල් පර වල  ස්ථානීය වශයෙන් දුර්ලභ ලෙස හමුවන දේශීය පක්ෂියෙකි. කලාතුරකින් වෙනත් එවැනි වියලි කලාපීය වෙරල තීරයන්ගේද හමුවේ. තනි තනි පක්ෂීන් ලෙසින්, ජෝඩු වශයෙන් මෙන්ම කුඩා රංචු වශයෙන්ද දිවි ගෙවන මෙම පක්ෂියා කලපු වල නොගැඹුරු ජලයේ මෙන්ම මුහුදු වෙරලේ උදම් සීමාවේ ඇවිදිමින් හෝ ජලයේ බැස ගමන් කරමින් ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් කකුළුවන් සහ බොහෝවිට සමුද්‍රිය වැලි පණුවන් සහ මොලුස්කා විශේෂ ගොදුරු කරගැනීම සිදුකරයි. කකුළු ඔලෙවියා මැයි සිට ජූනි දක්වා කාලයේ වෙරල තීරයට ආසන්න වැලි පරයක අඩි 2 සිට 4 දක්වා දුරකට හාරන ලද උමගක කෙලවර තනන කුඩා කුටීරයක එක් බිත්තරයක් දමා අභිජනනය කරයි.

Thick-billed Flowerpecker/මාතුඩු පිළිලිච්චා/ලැම ඉරි පිළලිච්චා [Matudu Pililichcha/Lema Iri Pilalichcha] (Dicaeum agile)

An uncommon breeding resident of forests, woodlands and well wooded home gardens from dry lowlands to adjoining mid hills. Rare and local in the wet zone. It lives as solitary birds or as pairs and feeds on juicy fruits, berries, nectar of flowers as well as the small insects and spiders. Thick-billed Flowerpecker lays two eggs in a closed, small pendulous nest, attached to a branch at the high canopy made with fibers and plastered with cobwebs. The breeding season lasts from March to July.

Greater Sand Plover/මහ වැලි ඔලෙය්යා/රජ වැලි ඔලෙවියා[Maha Weli Oleiya/Raja Weli Olewiya] (Charadrius leschenaultii)

Rather rare winter migrant to seashore, lagoons, shores of estuaries and mudflats of the coastal areas, mostly to the dry zone. It lives as solitary  birds or as small flocks. Greater Sand Plover feeds on small ground insects, crustaceans and worms. It breeds in far-eastern Asia and Japan.

පිටකළු මුහුදු කපුටා/හීන් පිටකළු ගලුවියා (Larus fuscus)

දිවයිනේ උතුරු සහ වයඹ දිග වෙරළබඩ කලපු, ලුණු ලේවායන් සහ උදම් වගුරු බිම් වලට කුඩා හෝ විශාල රංචු වශයෙන් උතුරු අර්ධගෝලයේ ශීත සෘතුව බලපැවැත්වෙන කාලයේදී පැමිණෙන සුලභ සංචාරක පක්ෂියෙකි. එසේම වරායන් අවට කසල සොයමින් හැසිරෙන පක්ෂීන් මෙන්ම ධීවර බෝට්ටු පසු පස පැමිණෙන පක්ෂීන්ද ඇතැම්විට දැක ගත හැක. ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් මත්ස්‍යයන් සහ වෙනත් කුඩා මුහුදු ජීවින් ගොදුරු කරගන්නා මෙම පක්ෂියා ඊට අමතරව මියගිය සත්වයන් මෙන්ම නැව් සහ ධීවර බෝට්ටු පසු පස ගොස් ඒවායින් ඉවත දමන කසල ආහාරයට ගැනීමද සිදු කරයි. පිටකළු මුහුදු කපුටා සයිබීරියාවේ සහ උතුරු යුරෝපයේ අභිජනනය කරයි.

Platostoma menthoides [Syn: Geniosporum tenuiflorum]

An indigenous herb in open , sandy grounds mainly near the shore in both dry and wet lowlands. Flowering from January to July.

Flower Size: 2 mm Across & 3 mm Long

Ipomoea coptica

An indigenous annual vine rare in sandy places, especially near the coast of the northern dry zone.

Flower Size: About 1.3 cm across.

Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata)

An uncommon winter migrant to the coastal areas, lagoons, tidal mudflats, estuaries, creeks, and grasslands of mainly the dry lowlands. Rarely occurs also in the wet zone coastal areas. It lives as solitary birds or as small to large scattered flocks, often in company with other waders, gulls, terns and likes.  Eurasian Curlew feeds on marine worms, shellfish and crustaceans by probing the mud, mostly when the tide begins to ebb. It breeds in Central and Northern Asia.
