An indigenous tree also native to Egypt, Arabia and India. Naturalized and spreading in the dry and arid areas, mainly near the coast. Bark use as a tanning material and timber hard as teak.

මහ අන්දර/කටු අන්දර[Maha Andara/Katu Andara] (Vachellia leucophloea [Syn: Acacia leucophloea])

Common native tree occurs in the dry areas of the country. Bark acting as a clarifier and flavoring agent in arrack distilling in India and for dyeing sails, mats, ropes and for tanning in Sri Lanka. Pods used as fodder and wood in construction industry.

Native plant of South America, Central America and West Indies. Introduced into Sri Lanka about 1926 as a cover crop to control soil erosion, green manure and probably also as a fodder for cattle. Naturalized along roadsides, wastelands etc. in the wet zone. Flowering from January to June.

මල් මාර/රතු මාර [Mal Mara/Rathu Mara]/Flame tree/Flamboyant/Golden Mohur (Delonix regia)

Native tree of Madagascar. Introduced into Sri Lanka before 1841 according to the H.F. Macmillan (Tropical planting and gardening with special reference to Ceylon, 1910) Flowering from February to May. It is a popular avenue tree along many roads especially of Colombo. It is also cultivated in home gardens as an ornamental tree.
