Lesser Yellownape/කොල කෑරලා/හීන් කහගෙලැසි කෑරලා (Picus chlorolophus)

A rather uncommon breeding resident of forests and well-wooded areas in the wet lowlands, extending into adjacent drier regions up to the mid hills, and occasionally occurring in the higher hills. It is usually found in pairs and often joins mixed-species feeding flocks. Unlike most woodpeckers, it readily descends to the ground to forage, probing fallen logs and dry cow dung for insects. Its diet consists mainly of wood-boring insects, their larvae, as well as termites and ants. The breeding season extends from February to May; the nest is a cavity excavated in a tree trunk or branch, where one or two eggs are laid.

එතරම් සුලභ නොවන ලෙස පහතරට වියලි කලාපයේ, ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් පොල් වතු වල දැකිය හැකි දේශිය පක්ෂියෙකි. ගම්පහ වැනි තෙත් කලාපයේ ඇතැම් ප්‍රදේශ වලද විසිරුණු  කුඩා ගහණයන් ස්ථානීය වශයෙන් හමුවේ. ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් ගස් කඳන් සහ අතු වල දැව තුල ගුල් හාරා වෙසෙන කෘමීන් ආහාරයට ගන්නා මෙම කෑරලා පොල් වැනි ගසක කඳ තුලට හාරන ලද බෙනයක බිත්තර දෙකක් දමා අභිජනනය කරයි. අභිජනන සමය ජනවාරි සිට මාර්තු දක්වා සහ බොහෝවිට නැවතත් අගෝස්තු සිට සැප්තැම්බර් දක්වා මාස වල සිදුවේ.

ගෝමර කෑරලා/කහ සිළු පිරි කෑරලා (Leiopicus maharattensis)

 එතරම් සුලභ නොවන ලෙස පහත රට වියලි කලාපයේ සිට වියලි කලාපයට අයත් කඳුකරයේ මධ්‍යම උස් මට්ටම් දක්වා වනාන්තර, හොඳින් ගහ කොළ සහිත ප්‍රදේශ සහ විවෘත ගහ කොළන් සහිත ප්‍රදේශ වල හමුවන දේශීය පක්ෂියෙකි. තවද මහනුවර ආශ්‍රිත තෙත් කලාපීය කඳුකරයේ පහල ප්‍රදේශ වලද විසිරුණු ගහණ ලෙසින් දැකිය හැක. ජෝඩු වශයෙන් හෝ කුඩා පවුල් රංචු ලෙසින් දිවිගෙවන මෙම කෑරලා ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් කෘමීන් ආහාරයට ගනී. පෙබරවාරි සිට ජූලි දක්වා කාලයේ ගසක කදක හෝ අත්තක පහල ප්‍රදේශයේ හාරන බෙනයක බිත්තර දෙකක් හෝ තුනක් දමා අභිජනනය කරයි.

Crimson-backed Flameback (Chrysocolaptes stricklandi)

Rather uncommon breeding resident inhabiting forests and nearby well-wooded areas throughout the island, but more common in the wet zone and the hills. It occurs mainly in pairs and feeds on ants, termites, and other insects found beneath tree bark. The breeding season extends from October to March, with an additional breeding period sometimes from August to September. One to three white eggs are laid in a tree hole of a dead tree or a large branch.

දකුණු සහ නැගෙනහිර කඳුකර වියලි කලාපයේ සහ නැගෙනහිර දිශාවෙන් කඳුකරයේ පාමුල දක්වාත් ආශ්‍රිත පහත රට වියලි කලාපයේත් විවෘත වනලැහැබවල්, ගෙවතු සහ තේ වතු වැනි වගා බිම් වලද හමුවන තරමක් දුර්ලභ දේශීය පක්ෂියෙකි. තනි තනි පක්ෂීන් ලෙසින් හෝ ජෝඩු වශයෙන් දිවිගෙවන මෙම කෑරලා අප්‍රියෙල් සිට සැප්තැම්බර් දක්වා කාලයේ ගසක කඳක් හෝ අත්තක් තුලට හාරන ලද බෙනයක බිත්තර 3ක් දමා අභිජනනය සිදු කරයි.

Streak-throated Woodpecker/ලා කොළ කෑරලා/ඉරිගෙල කෑරලා [La Kola Kerala/Irigela Kerala] (Picus xanthopygaeus)

Rather rare breeding resident of open woodlands, home gardens and plantations like tea estates in dry southern and eastern hills down to eastern foothills and near by dry lowlands. It lives as solitary birds or as pairs. The breeding season of Streak-throated Woodpecker appears to be during the south-west monsoon from April to September and it lays three eggs in a nest, a hole cut in the trunk or a branch of a tree.

Yellow Crowned Woodpecker/Yellow Fronted Pied Woodpecker/ගෝමර කෑරලා/කහ සිළු පිරි කෑරලා [Gomara Kerala/Kaha Silu Piri Kerala] (Leiopicus maharattensis)

 Rather uncommon breeding resident inhabiting forests, well wooded areas and open wooded areas of the dry lowlands up to dry mid hills. Also a small scattered populations occurred in the wet lower hills near Kandy. It lives as pairs or as small family parties and mainly feeds on ants. The breeding season is from February to July and it lays two or three eggs in a hole dug by the birds in a tree trunk or underside of a branch.

දිවයිනේ උතුරු ප්‍රදේශයේ හැර අනෙකුත් පහත රට සහ කඳුකර ප්‍රදේශ වල වනාන්තර, වගා බිම් සහ ගෙවතු වල සුලභ ලෙස හමුවන මෙරටට ආවේනික පක්ෂියෙකි. ජෝඩු වශයෙන් දිවි ගෙවන මෙම කෑරලා ගස් පොතු තුල සිටින කුහුඹුවන් වැනි කුඩා කෘමීන් ආහාරයට ගනී. කලාතුරකින් භූමිය මතද වසා එවැනි කෘමින් ගොදුරු කරගන්නා ආකාරය දැකිය හැක. මාර්තු සිට ජූනි දක්වා සහ අගෝස්තු සිට සැප්තැම්බර් දක්වා කාලයේ ගසක අත්තක් හෝ කඳ තුලට හෑරු බෙනයක බිත්තර දමා අභිජනනයේ යෙදේ.

බොර ඉසැසි ගෝමර කෑරලා/චූටි කෑරලා ( Picoides nanus)

පහත රට ප්‍රදේශ වල සිට කඳුකරයේ මධ්‍යම උස් මට්ටම දක්වා වියලි සහ තෙත් යන කලාප දෙකේම පාහේ වනාන්තර සහ ඒ ආශ්‍රිත හොඳින් ගහ කොළන් සහිත ගෙවතු වල එතරම් සුලභ නොවන ලෙස හමුවන පක්ෂියෙකි. ජෝඩු වශයෙන් ජීවත් වෙමින් ගස් වල පොත්ත තුල ජීවත් වන කුහුඹුවන්, වේයන්, වැනි කෘමීන් ගොදුරු කරගනී. බොහෝවිට ගස් මුදුන් වල ඇති හීනි අතු වල මේ ආකාරයෙන් කෘමින් සොයමින් යන මෙම කෑරලා නිතර සිය සහකරුවා සමග නාද කරමින් සම්බන්ධතාවය පවත්වා ගනී. පෙබරවාරි සිට ජූලි දක්වා කාලයේ දිරා ගිය අත්තක පහල මතුපිට හෝ කොටයක බෙනයක් හාරා එහි බිත්තර දෙකක් හෝ තුනක් දමා අභිජනනය කරයි.

Indian Pygmy Woodpecker/Brown-capped Pygmy Woodpecker/බොර ඉසැසි ගෝමර කෑරලා/චූටි කෑරලා ( Picoides nanus)

 An uncommon breeding resident of forests, wooded areas and adjoining well wooded home gardens from lowlands to mid hills of both wet and dry zones.  It lives as pairs and feeds on ants, termites and such other insects found inside tree barks, usually of thinner branches at top of trees. While feeding it keeps calling to its mate every now and then in a tinkling trill contact call. Indian Pygmy Woodpecker breeds from February to July and lays two or three eggs in a tree hole hewn on the lower surface of a dead branch or stump, often one or two inches or so in diameter.

Lesser Sri Lanka Flameback/Red-backed Woodpecker/කෑරලා (Dinopium psarodes)

 An endemic and very common bird inhabiting forests, cultivations and home gardens of lowlands and hills in all zones except the northern part of the country. It lives as pairs and feeds on ants and such other insects found inside tree barks and occasionally on ground. It breeds from March to June and again from August to September in a nest excavated into the branch or the trunk of a tree.

Annotated checklist of vagrant Woodpeckers (Family: Picidae) recorded in Sri Lanka

      Birds that appear outside their normal range are known as vagrants. This post summarizes up to date published sight records of vagrants of the family Picidae (Woodpeckers) in Sri Lanka.

      Eurasian Wryneck (Jynx torquilla)

First time recorded in Sri Lanka by A.J. Vincent on 7^th March 1993 from Sigiriya (Hoffmann, T. W., 1994). However CBC had decided to remove it from Sri Lanka list as having been accepted on misleading data (Warakagoda, D., 1999). But FOGSL members captured a bird on 5^th April 2002 at Yala during the bird ringing program of 2002 carried out from 3^rd to 8^th April (Kaluthota C.D. and Kotagama S.W., 2006). Again Uditha hettige reported a bird at Ruhuna National Park in 2003 (Warakagoda, D., 2004). Another sighting is given in the report of CBC for 2008-2011 near Yala Block 1 (Warakagoda D. & Sirivardana U., 2011) Dulan Ranga Vidanapathirana and M.D. Gehan Rajeev reported a sighting from Kudawa, near Sinharaja on 3rd February 2014 and confirmed with photographs taken on 26th February 2014.2011). (http://www.ceylonbirdclub.org/the_ceylon_bird_club_news.php).

White-naped Woodpecker/Black-rumped Woodpecker/Black-backed Yellow Woodpecker (Chrysocolaptes festivus)

Rather uncommon breeding resident found in dry low lands, mainly in coconut plantations. Scattered and local populations sometime occur in wet lowlands (e.g. Gampaha).  Its food consists of wood boring insects and seeds. The breeding season is from January to March and probably again from August to September and nest hole often hewn in the trunk of a coconut tree where it lays two eggs.

කෑරලා [Kerala]/Black-rumped Flameback(Dinopium benghalense)

Very common breeding resident of all climatic zones, occurs as two races in the island. Red backed woodpecker (D.b.psarodes) is the southern form distributed in forests, cultivations and home gardens of lowlands and hills while Golden-backed woodpecker (d.b.jaffnense) is mainly found in Northern coastal areas from Chilaw to Trincomalee. Two sub-species freely interbreed and intermediate forms occur in fringe areas. It lives as pairs and feeds on ants and such insects found inside tree barks and occasionally on ground.
