An introduced decumbent or erect herb grows on open, frequently wet places such as margins of paddy fields. Native to tropical and sub tropical America. A recent introduction to Sri Lanka and naturalized in some places in the Knuckles Range.

An endemic herb occurs in damp places close to ditches or a watercourse in the wet lowlands below 700 m a.s.l. Flowering from March to December*.

*Flowers observed end of January of  plants growing along the roadside of a fragmented wet lowland forest patch.

Common indigenous herb with creeping stems. Occurs in open marshy lands and along banks of ponds and creeks of the lowlands. Usually close to the coast. Flowering throughout the year. Used in Ayurvedic medicine.

 An indigenous herb grows among short grasses in wet places in the lowlands and wet hills up to about 500 m. Common on wet rocky surfaces and sometime also found in paddy fields. Flowering from November to July.
