මල් කොට්ටෝරුවා/රත්ළය කොට්ටෝරුවා (Megalaima haemacephala)

පහත රට වියලි කලාපයේ සහ යාබද කඳුකරයේ මධ්‍යම කොටස දක්වා වනාන්තර සහ ගෙවතු වල සුලභ දේශීය පක්ෂියෙකි. කලාතුරකින් තෙත් කලාපයේ ඇතැම් ස්ථාන වලින්ද වාර්තා වී ඇති අතර මහනුවර සහ අවිස්සාවෙල්ල වැනි ප්‍රදේශ වල නිත්‍ය ලෙස වාසය කරන ගහණද නිරීක්ෂණය කර ඇත. තනිව හෝ ජෝඩු වශයෙන් මෙන්ම ඇතැම් විට කුඩා රංචු ලෙසින්ද හැසිරෙන මල් කොට්ටෝරුවා ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් කුඩා ගෙඩි වර්ග ආහාරයට ගන්නා අතර ඇතැම්විට සලබයන් සහ මෙරු වැනි කෘමින්ද ගොදුරු කරගනී.  වසරේ නොවැම්බර් සිට මැයි දක්වා සහ නැවත ජූලි සිට සැප්තැම්බර් දක්වා කාලයේ ගසක දිරච්ච අත්තක කුහරයක් හාරා එහි බිත්තර 2 ක් හෝ 3 ක් හෝ දමා අභිජනනයේ යෙදේ.

පොළොස් කොට්ටෝරුවා (Megalaima Zeylanica)

 සියළුම දේශගුණික කලාප වල පාහේ සුලභව දැකිය හැකි පක්ෂියෙකු මුත් ඉහල කඳුකර කලාපයේ තරමක් දුර්ලභය. ඝන වනාන්තර වලට වඩා ගෙවතු සහ විවෘත ප්‍රදේශ වලට වැඩි කැමැත්තක් දක්වන අතර යුගල වශයෙන් හෝ කුඩා රංචු වශයෙන් හැසිරේ. විවිධ පළතුරු වර්ග, කුඩා ගෙඩි ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් අහාරයට ගන්නා මුත් කුරුමිණියන් වැනි කුඩා කෘමි සතුන්ද ගොදුරු කරගන්නා බව නිරීක්ෂණය කර ඇත. තුරුමත පමණක් හැසිරෙන අතර පොළොව මත කිසිවිටක දැකිය නොහැක. ප්‍රධාන අභිජනන කාලය පෙබරවාරි සිට ජූලි දක්වා වන අතර අගෝස්තු සිට සැප්තැම්බර් දක්වා වූ ද්වීතීයක අභිජනන සමයක්ද ඇතැම් විට සිදුවේ. පොලොස් කොට්ටෝරුවා මැරුණු ගසක කඳේ හෝ අත්තක සාදා ගත් කුහරයක සිය කූඩුව තනා ගනී.

Crimson-fronted Barbet (Megalaima rubricapillus)


Common breeding resident found in forests, open wooded areas, gardens and cultivation from wet lowlands to mid hills, and locale in the dry zone.  As all other barbets it is a fruit eater and out of the breeding season forms scattered flocks especially in the neighborhood of fruiting trees such as Bo, Nuga, etc. Otherwise it is mostly encounters as solitary birds or as pairs. The breeding season is from January to June and it lays 2-3 white eggs in a tree hole dug into the lower surface of a sloping branch rather than into an upright post. Some ornithologists consider Crimson-fronted Barbet as an endemic bird to Sri Lanka while others believe it as a proposed endemic which need to be verify taxonomically.

මූකලන් කොට්ටෝරුවා[Mookalan Kottoruwa]/Yellow-fronted Barbet (Megalaima rubricapillus)


Locally common endemic bird of forests and well wooded gardens from wet lowlands to mid hills.  Also occurs but scarce in eastern foothills and higher hills. Yellow-fronted Barbet feeds mainly on fruits. The breeding season is from February to May and again from August to September though occasional nests sometimes found at other months of the year.  It lays two or three white eggs in a hole of a soft-wooded dead stem or branch of a tree pecked out by birds themselves.

Coppersmith Barbet (Megalaima haemacephala)


Coppersmith Barbet is a very common bird of forests and gardens of low country dry zone and lower hills. However occasional sightings of it in some wet zone areas are recorded and scattered colonies are reported from places like Kandy and Avissawella (A Guide to the bird of Sri Lanka – G.M. Henry 3rd Edition).  It has a very unique note a slow wonk, wonk, wonk….like a hammer on a copper pan. Hence the name Coppersmith barbet. Its breeding season is from November to May and again from July to Sepetember. Lay 2-3 dull white eggs in a hole cut in a dead branch of a tree or an upright post.  It keeps solitary or in pairs and parties of few birds. Food mainly consist of berries and occasionally insects like moths and plying termites.

පොළොස් කොට්ටෝරුවා[Polos Kottoruwa]/Brown-headed Barbet (Megalaima Zeylanica)

Very common breeding resident of all zones while becoming less common at higher hills. Much prefer to village gardens and open lands than dense forests. It lives in pairs or sometime in small loose feeding parties, usually keep in touch by means of its loud monotonous call. Its food consist mainly of varies kind of berries and fruits. It also feed on insects such as beetles taken by fly, since being an arboreal bird it never descending to the ground. The main breeding season is from February to July while secondary season may be possible in August to September. Nest, a hole in a soft-wooded dead stem or branch of a tree pecked out by birds themselves.
