Adenostemma lavenia var. reticulatum [As Adenostemma macrophyllum]

Rather rare native herb grows in moist places in the hill country forests. Flowering throughout the year.

An endemic rather weedy herb  grows at fairly high elevations.     

Myriactis wightii

Common native herb grows among short grass in montane scrubs and forests. Flowering from September to April and probably throughout the year. 

 

වල් දුම්කොළ [Wal Dumkola](Sonchus wightianus)

 Common weed of roadsides and in the mortar of bridges and road embankments in the lower montane zone. Flowering from January to June and probably throughout the year. Possibly a native herb of Sri Lanka since it is falling within the natural distribution range of the species. But in absence of specimens of it earlier than 1915 Sonchus wightianus also considered as an introduced species which is native to India and China (http://www.plantsoftheworldonline.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:250399-1). 

Blumea zeylanica

An endemic tall herb of moist shady places at forest edges and roadsides above 1000 m a.s.l. Rather uncommon. Flowering throughout the year.

හුළංතලා/වල් තම්පලා[Hulantala/Wal tampala] (Gynura lycopersicifolia)

Common native herb of forest edges in moist places, generally above 5000 ft. Flowering throughout the year. 

මහ අක්මැල්ල[Maha Akmella]/Toothache plant (Acmella calva [Spilanthes calva])

An indigenous herb common in the moist boggy grounds at the margins of pools in the montane zone. Flowering from February to March.

මහ කිඹු [Maha Kimbu] (Dichrocephala integrifolia)

An indigenous common weed of drainage ditches, tea estates and moist waste grounds. Flowering throughout the year. 

Acilepis setigera (Syn: Vernonia setigera)

An indigenous shrub common in jungle paths and montane forests from 1500 - 1800 m elevations. Flowering from December to June.

Oriental false hawksbeard (Youngia japonica)

An indigenous very common weed of cultivation and roadsides at mid elevations. Flowering from September to June.

Quick weed (Galinsoga parviflora)

An introduced herb native to tropical South America. A common weed in cultivated grounds and wastelands. Flowering throughout the year.

Blumea hieraciifolia

An indigenous perennial herb growing in patana grasslands, roadsides and forest margins above 1000 m a.s.l. Flowering from October to May. The variety flexuosa is endemic to the Sri Lanka and it occurs in two forms (yellow - flowered and purple - flowered)

Gynura hispida

An endemic herb grows in moist rocky crevices above 6000 ft. elevations. Rare. Flowering from March to May.

මුඩමහණ/ඇත් මහ මහණ[Muda mahana/Eth Maha Mahana]/East Indian Globe Thistle/(Sphaeranthus indicus)

Common native annual herb in moist soil and margins of paddy fields. Flowering from September to March. Whole plant medicinal.

Acilepis gardneri [Syn: Vernonia gardneri]

Rather rare endemic perennial herb or subshrubs occurs in moist shady places of the hill country.  Flowering from February to May. 

Mistflower/Spreading snakeroot (Ageratina riparia [Syn: Eupatorium riparium])

Native herb of Mexico and West Indies. Probably introduced as an ornamental (Earliest specimen was collected from the neighborhood of  Hakgala Botanic garden in 1926). Escaped and widely naturalized along roadsides and tracks, margins of cultivation and forest edges and waste lands above 1300 m elevations.It has become a serious weed and listed as a invasive plant to Sri Lanka. Mistflower forms a dense strand and prevent the growth of native plants. Seeds spread by wind and water. Flowering from December to May and probably throughout the year.

වල් තේ කොළ [Wal te kola]Ceylon tea/Spanish needle/Beggar's tick (Bidens pilosa var. pilosa)

An introduced herb native to temperate and tropical America. Naturalized in Sri Lanka and occurs as two varieties.
var. pilosa (Above pic) - Without or usually with very small white ray flowers. Only known from Peradeniya-Kandy area. Flowering from November to March.
var. minor - Very common weed of roadsides, disturbed places, cultivated grounds, etc. in the montaze zone. Flowering occurs throughout the year.

Madras Carpet (Grangea maderaspatana)

An uncommon  native prostrate herb on moist grounds like margins of tanks in the drier northern part of the country. Flowering throughout the year.

Anaphalis subdecurrens

Native annual herb very common on grassy banks and patanas of hill country from 1200 to 2100 m elevations. Flowering throughout the year. 

Anaphalis brevifolia

An indigenous much branched annual or biennial herb occurs in grassy banks and patanas from  1500 to 2100 m a.s.l. Rather common and flowering from September to April.
