මළ මිරිස් වැල්/වල් ගම්මිරිස් [Mala Miris Wel/Wal Gammiris] (Piper fallax [Syn: Piper sylvestre])

An indigenous terrestrial vine common in the lower hill country and ascending to about 800 m a.s.l. (Rarely up to 1300 m a.s.l.) Rare and usually confined to gallery forests in the dry zone. Most frequent in secondary forests.

දිය තිප්පිලි/දිය බුලත්[Diya tippili/Diya bulat]Shiny bush/Pepper elder/Pansit (Peperomia pellucida)

Native annual herb of tropical America. Introduced probably around 1884 since it was not recorded from Sri Lanka before 1884(Flora of Ceylon Vol 6). Now widely distributed in disturbed places, home gardens, on wet rocks, vertical banks and also as an epiphyte on roadside trees in wet lowlands up to about 500 m a.s.l. Local and rare in the dry zone. Flowering probably throughout the year. Whole plant edible and can be used in salads.

A twining herb native to eastern and western ghats of India. Introduced in an unknown period of the history and naturalized in secondary and disturbed primary forests of the wet zone up to about 800 m elevations. Also cultivated in large scale.

Vietnamese Pepper/wild Betel (Piper Sarmentosum)

An introduced prostrate herb native to Northeastern India, South China and Malaysia. Cultivated in home gardens.
