Daurian Starling (Agropsar sturninus)

A rare migrant found locally in lowland open woodlands, forest edges, secondary growth, shrublands, and cultivated areas. During its stay in Sri Lanka, it occurs singly, in pairs, or in small flocks. Daurian Starling breeds in Northeast Asia and winters in Southeast Asia.

තිත්හොට තාරාවා (Anas poecilorhynacha)

 තිත්හොට තාරාවා මෑතක් වනතුරුම දුර්ලභ සංචාරක පක්ෂියෙකු ලෙස සැලකුන මුත් මන්නාරම දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ වන්කාලෙයි රම්සාර් තෙත් බිම් වල අභිජනනය කරන පක්ෂීන් වාර්තා වීමත් සමග, ශ්‍රී ලංකාව තුල අභිජනනය කරන දේශිය පක්ෂියෙකු ලෙස හඳුනාගෙන ඇත. එසේම ඉන්දියාවේ සිට පැමිණෙන සංචාරක තිත්හොට තාරාවන්ද ඊසානදිග මෝසම් සුලං හැමීම ආරම්භයත් සමග මෙරටට පැමිණෙන බවට විශ්වාස කරනු ලැබේ. යාපනය අර්ධද්වීපයේ, මහවැලි ගංගාධාර ජාතික උද්‍යයානයේ සහ නැගෙනහිර හිර මුහුදු වෙරල තීරයේ වැව්, කුඹුරු සහ වගුරු බිම් වලින් වාර්තා වන පක්ෂීන් මෙසේ මෙරටට සංක්‍රමණය වන පක්ෂීන් ලෙස සලකණු ලැබේ. මේ සමග වන ඡායාරූපය 2026-සැප්තැම්බර් මස 27 වන දින කොළඹ දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ තලවතුගොඩ ප්‍රදේශයේ කිඹුලාවල වගුරු බිම් ආශ්‍රිතව වාර්තා වූ තිත්හොට තාරාවෙකුගේ වන අතර 2026 සැප්තැම්බර් මස 26 වන දින පක්ෂීන් දෙදෙනෙකු පලමුවරට එම ප්රදේශයෙන් පක්ෂී නිරීක්ෂකයන් විසින් වාර්තා කර ඇත. බොහෝදුරට ඒ කොළඹ දිස්ත්රික්කයෙන් මෙම පක්ෂීන් වාර්තා වූ පළමු අවස්ථාව විය යුතුය.

Black-naped Tern (Sterna sumatrana)

 A very rare vagrant with only a few recorded sightings in Sri Lanka. The first record was made on 3rd September 1994 by Laksiri Karunaratne several kilometers off the coast of Colombo. A later sighting by Lahiru Walpita at Olaiththoduvai of the Mananr island on 25th May 2025, supported by photographic evidence, is probably the second record, while the third was reported from Mount Lavinia Beach by Gary Allport and Moditha Kodikara Arachchi on 15th May 2026.

It breeds on tropical islands of the Indian Ocean, including the Andaman and Maldives islands, as well as in the western Pacific. It feeds mainly on fish in the clear waters around offshore islets, usually by picking prey from the water surface and occasionally by plunge-diving, often in association with other terns. The breeding season extends from May to July, during which it nests in dispersed colonies.

 

අලු ගිරවා (Psittacula calthropae)

 පහත රට තෙත් කලාපයේ සිට කදුකරයේ මධ්‍යම උස් මට්ටම දක්වාත්, පහත රට වියලි කලාපයේ කදුකරයේ පහල මට්ටම් වලත් වනාන්තර සහ හොදින් ගහ කොළ සහිත ප්‍රදේශ වල ස්ථානීය වශයෙන් සුලභ මෙරටට ආවේනික පක්ෂියෙකි. කෙසේ නමුත් අලු ගිරවා වඩාත් සුලභ ලෙස හමුවන්නේ කදු පාමුල සිට මීටර 1500 උස් මට්ටම් දක්වා ප්රදේශ වලය. ජෝඩු ලෙසින් හෝ කුඩා රංචු ලෙසින් දිවි ගෙවන මේ පක්ෂියා ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් පළතුරු, මල් වර්ග සහ මල් පැණි ආහාරයට ගනී. අලු ගිරවා ජනවාරි සිට මැයි දක්වාත්, නැවත ජූලි සිට සැප්තැම්බර් දක්වාත් ගසක කදක ඇති බෙනයක බිත්තර 2 හෝ 3 ක් දමා අභිජනනය කරයි.

නීලකොබෙයියා (Chalcophaps indica robinsoni)

 මෙරට සියළුම දේශගුණික කලාප වල පාහේ වනාන්තර සහ හොදින් ගහ කොළ සහිත ගෙවතු සහ වගා බිම් වල සුලභ දේශීය පක්ෂියෙකි. ඉහල කදුකරයේ දුර්ලභ වන අතර වියලි කලාපයේ එතරම් සුලභ නොවේ. විවිධ ධාන්‍ය වර්ග, ශාක බීජ සහ ගෙඩි වර්ග ආහාරයට ගන්නා නීලකොබෙයියා තනිව හෝ ජෝඩු වශයෙන් බොහෝවිට භූමිය මත දැකිය හැක. වසර පුරාම පාහේ අභිජනන ක්‍රියාවලියේ නිරත වන මුත් පෙබරවාරි-මාර්තු සහ බොහෝවිට නැවතත් සැප්තැම්බර් මාසයේ අභිජනන ක්‍රියාවලියේ වැඩිවීමක් නිරීක්ෂණය කල හැක. වනාන්තරයේ කුඩා ගසක් හෝ පදුරක් මත තනන කූඩුවක බිත්තර දෙකක් පමණ දමා නීලකොබෙයියා අභිජනනය කරයි.

Ashy-headed Laughingthrush/හිස අළු දෙමළිච්චා/ශ්‍රී ලංකා හිසළු උප-දෙමළිච්චා (Argya cinereifrons)

An endemic and uncommon species, it is locally occurs in dense forests of the wet lowlands and adjacent hills. It typically forages on the forest floor in small flocks, feeding mainly on insects. The Ashy-headed Laughingthrush often joins mixed-species feeding flocks. Breeding occurs primarily during the first part of the year—most likely from March to May—as well as from August to January. The nest is a rather untidy structure of twigs and leaves, with a neat nest-cup on top, in which three eggs are laid. 

 

Ashy Drongo/අළු කවුඩා (Dicrurus leucophaeus)

An uncommon winter migrant to open woodlands and forest edges, mainly in the lowlands. It occurs as solitary birds, in pairs, or in small flocks, feeding on insects caught in flight, often by sallying from a high, exposed perch. It breeds in the hills of tropical southern Asia, ranging from eastern Afghanistan to southern China and the islands of southern Japan, as well as in Indonesia.

 

White-faced Starling/හිස සුදු මයිනා/ශ්‍රීලංකා වත සුදු ශාරිකාවා (Sturnornis albofrontatus)

An endemic species, locally uncommon to rare in occurrence, inhabiting forests and adjacent well-wooded areas from the wet lowlands to the adjoining higher hills. It lives as pairs or as small flocks, feeding mainly on wild fruits in the canopy of tall trees. It also supplements its diet probably with insects and is particularly fond of nectar from flowers such as the red cotton tree. It nests in tree cavities, laying two eggs, with breeding recorded in April.

Lesser Yellownape/කොල කෑරලා/හීන් කහගෙලැසි කෑරලා (Picus chlorolophus)

A rather uncommon breeding resident of forests and well-wooded areas in the wet lowlands, extending into adjacent drier regions up to the mid hills, and occasionally occurring in the higher hills. It is usually found in pairs and often joins mixed-species feeding flocks. Unlike most woodpeckers, it readily descends to the ground to forage, probing fallen logs and dry cow dung for insects. Its diet consists mainly of wood-boring insects, their larvae, as well as termites and ants. The breeding season extends from February to May; the nest is a cavity excavated in a tree trunk or branch, where one or two eggs are laid.

Black-throated Munia/කඳු වී කුරුල්ලා/ගෙල කළු වී කුරුල්ලා (Lonchura kelaarti)

A rather rare and locally distributed breeding resident, found in wooded home gardens, cultivated areas, forest clearings, scrublands, tea estates, and forests from the wet-zone foothills to the higher hills. It occurs in pairs or small flocks, sometimes associating with other munia species, and feeds mainly on seeds and grains. Breeding likely takes place throughout the year, with a peak from April to September. The nest is a loosely constructed ball of grass, placed in a densely foliaged tree or creeper, where 4–5 eggs are laid. 

සැළලිහිණියා (Gracula ptilogenys)

එතරම් සුලභ නොවන ලෙසට පහත රට තෙත් කලාපයේ සිට කදුකරයේ මධ්‍යම උස් මට්ටම් දක්වා වනාන්තර සහ වනාන්තර ආශ්‍රිත හොදින් ගහ කොළ සහිත ගෙවතු සහ වගාබිම් ආදියේ ස්ථානීය වශයෙන් හමුවන මෙරටට ආවේනික පක්ෂියෙකි. ජෝඩු හෝ කුඩා රංචු වශයෙන් වනාන්තර උඩු වියනේ සැරිසරමින් පළතුරු සහ කුඩා ගෙඩි වර්ග ආහාරයට ගන්නා මෙම සැළලිහිණියා වසරේ පෙබරවාරි සිට මැයි දක්වා කාලයේ සහ බොහෝවිට නැවතත් අගෝස්තු සිට සැප්තැම්බර් දක්වා කාලයේ ගස් බෙනයක බිත්තර දමා අභිජනනය කරයි.

මහ ගිනි-කුරුල්ලා/ලෝහවන්නිච්චා (Harpactes fasciatus)

 එතරම් සුලභ නොවන ලෙසට පහත රට තෙත් කලාපයේ සිට කදුකරය දක්වා ඝන කැලෑ වල දැකිය හැකි දේශීය පක්ෂියෙකි. වියලි කලාපීය වනාන්තර වලද ස්ථානීය වශයෙන් දුර්ලභ ලෙස හමුවේ. ජෝඩු වශයෙන් හෝ කුඩා රංචු ලෙස දිවි ගෙවන මෙම පක්ෂියා, කුරුමිණියන්, සලබයන්, දරමිටියන් වැනි පියාඹන කෘමීන් ආහාරයට ගන්නා අතර,  බොහෝ විට උදෑසන හෝ සවස් කාලයේ නිසොල්මන්ව ගසක අත්තක් මත වසාසිට එක්වරම ඉගිලී ගොස් එවන් සතුන් දඩයම් කරයි. එකම මගක දිනපතා විවිධ වර්ගයේ පක්ෂීන් එකතු වී  ආහාර සොයා යන පක්ෂි රංචු සමගද ගමන් ගන්නා මෙම මහ ගිනි කුරුල්ලා පෙබරවාරි සිට ජූනි දක්වා කාලයේ දිරාගිය හෝ මැරිච්ච ගසක කදේ බෙනයක් තුල බිත්තර 2ත් 3ත් අතර ප්‍රමාණයක් දමා අභිජනනය කරයි. ගැහැණු සහ පිරිමි පක්ෂීන් දෙදෙනාම එක්ව බිත්තර රැකීමේ නිරත වේ.

මහ රන් කෑරලා/සුදුගෙලැසි මහ කෑරලා(Chrysocolaptes festivus)

එතරම් සුලභ නොවන ලෙස පහතරට වියලි කලාපයේ, ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් පොල් වතු වල දැකිය හැකි දේශිය පක්ෂියෙකි. ගම්පහ වැනි තෙත් කලාපයේ ඇතැම් ප්‍රදේශ වලද විසිරුණු  කුඩා ගහණයන් ස්ථානීය වශයෙන් හමුවේ. ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් ගස් කඳන් සහ අතු වල දැව තුල ගුල් හාරා වෙසෙන කෘමීන් ආහාරයට ගන්නා මෙම කෑරලා පොල් වැනි ගසක කඳ තුලට හාරන ලද බෙනයක බිත්තර දෙකක් දමා අභිජනනය කරයි. අභිජනන සමය ජනවාරි සිට මාර්තු දක්වා සහ බොහෝවිට නැවතත් අගෝස්තු සිට සැප්තැම්බර් දක්වා මාස වල සිදුවේ.

 එතරම් සුලභ නොවන ලෙස පහත රට වියලි කලාපයේ සිට වියලි කලාපයට අයත් කඳුකරයේ මධ්‍යම උස් මට්ටම් දක්වා වනාන්තර, හොඳින් ගහ කොළ සහිත ප්‍රදේශ සහ විවෘත ගහ කොළන් සහිත ප්‍රදේශ වල හමුවන දේශීය පක්ෂියෙකි. තවද මහනුවර ආශ්‍රිත තෙත් කලාපීය කඳුකරයේ පහල ප්‍රදේශ වලද විසිරුණු ගහණ ලෙසින් දැකිය හැක. ජෝඩු වශයෙන් හෝ කුඩා පවුල් රංචු ලෙසින් දිවිගෙවන මෙම කෑරලා ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් කෘමීන් ආහාරයට ගනී. පෙබරවාරි සිට ජූලි දක්වා කාලයේ ගසක කදක හෝ අත්තක පහල ප්‍රදේශයේ හාරන බෙනයක බිත්තර දෙකක් හෝ තුනක් දමා අභිජනනය කරයි.

Indian Golden Oriole (Oriolus kundoo)

A rare winter migrant to the lowlands and lower hill wooded areas, occurring either singly or in small flocks. It feeds on fruits—particularly figs and berries—as well as insects, especially caterpillars. Indian Golden Oriole breeds in the hills of Baluchistan, northern and eastern Afghanistan, Nepal, and parts of India, including the Himalayan region.

Eastern Red-rumped Swallow (Cecropis daurica)

An uncommon winter migrant found mainly in the open-country habitats of the southern dry foothills, and rare in other parts of the country. It occurs as single individuals, small flocks, or occasionally in larger gatherings, often in association with other swallow species. It feeds on small flying insects, which it captures in flight.
 

Gray-headed Lapwing (Vanellus cinereus)

A very rare vagrant, with only a few records from the north-western and south-eastern regions of the country. It frequents still-water and short-grass habitats, including dry paddy fields and pasture lands, where it often associates with other waders. Although generally gregarious and known to form flocks of up to 40–50 individuals elsewhere, all Sri Lankan records have involved solitary birds. The species breeds in North-East Asia and winters in South-East Asia. This individual was observed on 4th January 2025 at the Kerawalapitiya waste disposal site near Muturajawela in the Gampaha District.

මහා ලිහිණි ඔලෙය්යා/පෙරදිගු ජවසැරියා (Glareola maldivarum)

එතරම් සුලභ නොවන ලෙස ස්ථානීය වශයෙන් වෙරළබඩ  වියලි විවෘත භූමි සහ තෘණ භූමි වලත් පහත රට වියලි කලාපයේ වැව් ඉවුරු ආශ්‍රිතවත් හමුවන දේශීය පක්ෂියෙකි. එසේම උත්තර අර්ධගෝලයේ රටවල ශීත සෘතුව පවතින මාස වලදී මෙරටට සංචාරය කරන පක්ෂීන්ද සිටින අතර, ඇතැම් විට ඔවුන් විශාල රංචු ලෙසින්ද හමුවේ. කුඩා සහ විශාල රංචු ලෙසින් දිවිගෙවන මහ ලිහිණි ඔලෙයියන් උදෑසන සහ සවස් කාලයේදී ක්‍රියාශීලි වන අතර කුරුමිණියන්, සලබයන් වේයන් වැනි පියාඹන කෘමීන් බොහෝවිට රංචු ලෙසින් ඉගිලී ගොස් ගොදුරු කරගනී. දිවා කාලයේදී පොළව මත විවේකීව සිටින අතර ඇතැම් අවස්ථා වලදී ඔලෙවියන් මෙන් එහෙ මෙහෙ දුවන අයුරු නිරීක්ෂණය කල හැක. මාර්තු සිට ජූලි දක්වා කාලයේ කූඩුවක් නොසාදා පොළොව මත, බොහෝවිට වියලි ගොම ගොඩක් මත බිත්තර දෙකක් දමා අභිජනනය කරයි.

Collared Pratincole/දිඟු පෙඳ ලිහිණි ඔලෙය්යා/මාල ජවසැරියා (Glareola pratincola)

 Rather rare winter migrant to dry coastal lowlands. Gregarious and few to several birds keep together in bare ground around coastal wetlands. The Collared Pratincole feeds on insects both in flight and on the ground, mainly in the late afternoon or during overcast weather. During the heat of the day, it rests on bare ground or short grass, especially near water. It breeds from the Mediterranean region through Central Asia to Pakistan, and also in parts of Africa.

Pied Harrier/ගෝමර බිම් උකුස්සා/ගෝමර හැරිකුස්සා (Circus melanoleucos)

A very rare winter migrant to open scrubland, grasslands, marshes, and paddy fields across the country, mainly in the dry lowlands. It typically glides slowly just a few feet above the ground over marshes, paddy fields, and other open habitats, feeding on frogs, rodents, lizards, small birds, snakes, grasshoppers, and similar prey. It often perches on the ground and roosts at night in open fields and marshes, sometimes loosely associating with other harriers of the same or different species. The Pied Harrier breeds in the tundra regions of eastern Asia.
