Dollarbird /හොට පළල් දුම්බොන්නා/දුම්කාවා (Eurystomus orientalis)

A rare breeding resident found in forests, forest clearings, and adjoining open areas from the lowlands to the lower hills. It lives either solitarily or in pairs and usually perches on the tops of tall trees, from where it flies out to catch insects in flight. The breeding season lasts from February to April. The nest is built in a cavity of a dead tree, often in an abandoned woodpecker hole, which the bird enlarges to suit its needs. A clutch consists of three to four eggs.

දුම්බොන්නා (Coracias benghalensis)

දුම්බොන්නා පහත රට වියලි කලාපයේ සිට කඳුකරයේ පහල කොටස දක්වා සුලභ දේශිය පක්ෂියෙකි. පහත රට තෙත් කලාපයේද දුර්ලභ ලෙසින් ඇතැම් ස්ථාන වල කලාතුරකින් දැක ගත හැක. පොල් වතු, හේන් වැනි විවෘත ස්ථාන වල තනි පක්ෂීන් ලෙසින් හෝ ජෝඩු වශයෙන් හමුවේ. තෘණ භූමි සහ ලඳු බිම් ගිනි තැබූ විට හෝ විශේෂයෙන්ම හේන් වගාවන් සඳහා වනාන්තර බිම් ගිනි ගන්නා විට එම ගින්නෙන් බේරීම සඳහා පියඹා යන පළගැටියන්, කුරුමිණියන් වැනි පියාඹන කෘමීන් ඩැහැ ගැනීම උදෙසා එම ගිනි ගන්නා ස්ථාන උඩින් පියඹා යෑම නිසා දුම්බොන්නා ලෙසින් සිංහල ගැමියන් අතර මෙම පක්ෂියා හැඳින්වේ. එවන් කෘමීන්ට අමතරව කටුස්සන් හිකනලන් වැනි කුඩා සතුන්ද ආහාරයට ගන්නා දුම්බොන්නා බොහෝවිට මෙම රූපයේ පෙනෙන අයුරින්ම, දුරකථන හෝ විදුලි රැහැන් මත හෝ වැටක කණුවක් වැනි වෙනත් එවැනි උස් ස්ථානයක බොහෝවේලා සිටිමින් පහලට පියඹා ගොස් එවන් සතුන් ගොදුරු කරගනී. ජනවාරි සිට ජූනි දක්වා කාලයේ දිරාගිය ගසක බෙනයක් තුල බිත්තර 2 සිට 4 දක්වා ප්‍රමාණයක් දමා දුම්බොන්නා අභිජනනය කරයි.

දුම්බොන්නා [Dumbonna]/Indian Roller (Coracias benghalensis)

Indian Roller is a common breeding resident in dry lowlands up to lower hills, while uncommon and local in wet lowlands. It is common mostly in coconut plantations, chena cultivation and such open areas, usually as solitary birds or in pairs. It is known as Dumbonna among Sinhalese people meaning Smoke-drinker since it has a habit of flying over the grass and shrub fires usually when burning jungles for chena cultivation to catch grasshoppers, beetles and other flying insects disturbed by the fire. Indian Roller spend much of its time sitting on a telegraph wires, fence posts or any such vantage points and flying down to catch its prey, which consists of grasshoppers, beetles, lizards and such little animals. It breeds from January to June laying 2-4 white eggs in a tree hole of a dead tree or in a rotten palm trunk.
