දිය දඟ[Diya danga] (Dolichandrone spathacea)

Rather uncommon native tree mainly found in mangrove swamps, lagoons and tidal marshes of the southwestern wet lowland coastline from Negombo to Galle*.  Flowers open at sunset and fall off early the next morning. Very fragrant flowers are pollinated by moths. Flowering from May to July.

Garlic Vine (Mansoa hymenaea)

An introduced vine native to the central America. Cultivated in gardens. Bruised leaves has a garlic smell, hence the name Garlic vine.

An introduced shrub or small tree native to tropical America. Widely planted along roads and in gardens. Not naturalized. Flowering intermittently throughout the year.

African tulip tree (Spathodea campanulata)


Introduced from West Africa and now widespread in moist lowlands and sub montane region up to about 1200m elevations of the island. Cultivate as ornamental and shade tree in home gardens and roadsides. A large tree of about 30m height branching widely at top. Bright Orange-Red flowers blooms during June-September months of the year.
