රෑන ගිරවා/මාල ගිරවා (Pstittacula krameri)

පහත රට ප්‍රදේශ වල සිට කඳුකරය ආරම්භ වන උස මට්ටම දක්වාම ඉතාමත් සුලභව හමුවන දේශීය පක්ෂියෙකි. බොහෝවිට රංචු වශයෙන් ඉතාමත් වේගයෙන් ශබ්ද නගමින් පියාඹන රෑන ගිරවුන් පළතුරු, මල් පොහොට්ටු, ශාක බීජ ආදිය ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන්  අහාරයට ගනී. එසේම වී වගාවට විශාල හානියක් කරමින් පැසුණු වී කරල් කා දමයි. නොවැම්බර් සිට ජූනි දක්වා කාලයේ දිරාගිය ගසක බෙනයක් තුල බිත්තර දමා අභිජනනයේ යෙදේ.

ලබු ගිරවා [Labu Girawa]/Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria)

An uncommon breeding resident from lowlands to mid hills. But locally more common in some areas. It is mainly a dry lowland bird though seldom occurs in the wet zone. Alexandrine Parakeet inhabits forests and wooded areas as pairs or as small to large flocks. It feeds on fruits, seeds, grains, etc. The breeding season is from November to May. The nest hole is usually a natural cavity or an old woodpecker''s hole in a large dead or living tree, which the parakeets enlarge to suit its own needs. It lays 2-4 eggs in it.

අලු ගිරවා[Alu Girawa]/Sri Lanka Emerald-collared Parakeet/Layard's Parakeet (Psittacula calthropae)

Locally common endemic parrot inhabiting forests and well wooded areas in the wet lowlands to mid-hills and foothills of the dry lowlands. However its main habitat is in the hills from their bases to about 1500 a.s.l. It lives as pairs or as small flocks. Sri Lanka Emerald-collared Parakeet feeds on fruits, flowers,buds, nectar etc. The breeding season is from January to May and again from July to September. The nest is a hole in the trunk of a tree where it lays 2-3 eggs.

ගිරාමලිත්තා/Gira Maliththa/Hanging Parrot/Lorikeet (Loriculus beryllinus)



An endemic and locally common bird of forests and well wooded home gardens in wet lowlands to mid hills. Also found in foothill areas of the dry lowlands. Hanging parrot is a strictly arboreal bird and usually encounters as solitary birds or as pairs (Warakagoda D et. al., 2012). However above bird was captured in a feeding flock, travelling through the Acacia plantation of Meethirgala forest reserve with at least 50 companions of the same species. It feeds on fruits, nectar of flowers, seeds and also juice of palms collected in toddy-drawers pots. While feeding it has very restless characteristic behavior of hangs at all sort of angles. It sleeps hanging head downward from a slender, leafy twig. Hanging Parrot breeds in a tree hole from March to June and sometime again from August to September. Female builds the nest with strips nibbled from the edge of green leaves and lays 2-3 white color eggs.

රෑන ගිරවා/මාල ගිරවා [Raana Girawa/Mala Girawa]/Rose-ringed Parakeet(Pstittacula krameri)


Very common breeding resident of low lands and foot hills of the island. It has a characteristic fast and noisy flight often in flocks. Rose-ringed parakeet feeds on fruits, buds and seeds and does considerable damages to ripening paddy. The breeding seasons is from November to June and nest usually a hole in a dead tree or decaying palm trunk.
