බොර සබරිත්තා/දුඹුරු ඇස්පටියා (lanius cristatus)

 මෙරටට පැමිණෙන සුලභ සංචාරක පක්ෂියෙකි බොර සබරිත්තා හෙවත් දුඹුරු ඇස්පටියා. බොර සබරිත්තන් උප වීශේෂ දෙකක් මෙරට තුලදි වාර්තා කර ඇති අතර ඒ අතරින් මධ්‍යම ආසියාවේ අභිජනනයේ යෙදෙන cristatus උප විශේෂය බහුලව දැකගත හැකි අතර නැගෙනහිර ආසියාවේ අභිජනනය කරන lucionensis උප විශේෂයද ඇතැම් අවස්ථා වලදී මෙරට තුලදී නිරීක්ෂණය කර ඇත. දිවයින පුරාම පාහේ ගස් කොලන් සහිත විවෘත ස්ථාන වල හමුවන දුඹුරු සබරිත්තන් තණකොලපෙත්තන්, කුරුමිණියන් වැනි කෘමි සතුන් ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් ගොදුරු කර ගනී.

Long-tailed Shrike/Rufous-backed Shrike/Rufous-rumped Shrike/දික්පෙඳ සබරිත්තා/ගුරු ඇස්පටියා[Dikpendha Sabariththa/Guru Aespatiya] (Lanius schach)

Rather uncommon breeding resident distributed mainly in the North and North-western dry and arid zones. Rare in the North-central region. It inhabits open country, forests and scrub lands, often as pairs or as solitary birds. It usually perches on an exposed branch of a bush or a post and catches its prey on air. Long-tailed Shrike feeds mainly on insects such as grasshoppers and beetles . But also catch small lizards, frogs and sometimes nesting birds. The breeding season lasts from February to June. The nest is a cup made out of grasses, creeper-stems, rootlets, etc. placed often in  thorny Acacias where it lays 2-4 eggs

Annotated checklist of vagrant Shrikes (Family: Laniidae) recorded in Sri Lanka

     Birds that appear outside their normal range are known as vagrants. This post summarizes up to date published sight records of vagrants of the family Laniidae (Shrikes) in Sri Lanka.

Great Grey Shrike [Northern Shrike/Southern Grey Shrike](Lanius excubitor meridionalis)
First sight record of it is from a scrub jungle on the outskirts of paddy cultivation near Kekirawa during December 1940 (Phillips W.W.A, 1978). Second record is from 6-7th mile of Murunkan - Silavaturai Road in May 1974 (Hoffmann, T. W., 1975).
Several other sightings are - 
1) Single bird from Maho in January 1978 (Hoffmann, T. W.,1979), 
2) Single bird (Pied Shrike?) from Pannikar villu-Wilpattu in January 1983 (Hoffmann, T. W., 1984), 
3) Single bird at Hantana in January 1985 (Hoffmann, T. W., 1986), 
4) Two sighting in February 1986 - one at Buttuwa in Yala and other one at Horton plains (Hoffmann, T. W., 1987
5) Sighting of two birds at Ampitiya in January 1992 (Hoffmann, T. W.. 1993)

Brown Shrike (lanius cristatus)


Brown shrike is a migrant to the island. It occurs as two races in Sri Lanka and race cristatus is the most common while Philippine Shrike or race lucionensis is uncommon. Both races can be seen in open areas with trees or bushes throughout the country. While its stay in Sri Lanka it feeds on insects like grasshoppers, beetles, etc. Brown shrike (race cristatus ) breeds in central Asian region and ‘Philippine’ in Eastern Asia
