Literature published to date list 108 Tetrapoda reptile species in Sri Lanka (of which 76 are endemic) including five species of marine turtles that visit the beaches of the island for nesting. Considerable number of new species of geckos, skinks and Agamid lizards were discovered recently and current studies indicate the presence of several more new lizards in the country to be discovered or/and formally described. Other than these resident species at least one species of introduced terrapins (Invasive Red-eared Slider - Imported as a pet and escaped/released specimens have been established a stable population) present in few aquatic habitats, mainly around Colombo.
